FK's Story

English

French

After overcoming a difficult childhood in Burkina Faso, FK worked hard to move to the United States, and eventually, her mother joined her. FK was diagnosed with hepatitis B six months after arriving, so she began educating herself and encouraging family and friends to get screened. Despite the stigma and lack of knowledge around hepatitis B in her community, which has impacted her relationships, FK is working to address these misconceptions and is hopeful for the future.

Discussion Questions and Answers:

How did FK’s upbringing shape his resilience and outlook after his hepatitis B diagnosis?
(FK grew up in a difficult environment and watched his mother take on both parental roles. That strength influenced him—he worked hard to support himself through school and to bring his mother to the U.S. After his diagnosis, he drew on that same inner strength to keep going and learn how to manage his health.)

What does FK’s experience reveal about common misconceptions and stigma around hepatitis B?
(He’s faced rejection in relationships and heard inaccurate beliefs in his community, such as the idea that hepatitis B can be spread through kissing. His story shows how misinformation fuels stigma and highlights the need for accurate education.)

What role did family support play in FK’s journey?
(His mother has been a constant source of strength. When she tested negative for hepatitis B, it was a huge relief for FK. Her ongoing love and support give him hope that he’ll one day find a partner who accepts him, too.)
