Alexei’s story of living with hepatitis B and C in Russia and Germany

Alexei is a harm reduction and public health specialist with more than 15 years of experience in HIV and viral hepatitis prevention, community engagement, and civil society leadership. His work has focused in particular on hepatitis B and C among people who use drugs, including peer-led outreach, testing and treatment linkages, and advocacy to remove legal and structural barriers to care created by criminalization and incarceration.

He has held key roles at United Against Hepatitis (Moscow), where he worked as a communications officer and peer counsellor, and at Humanitarian Action (Saint Petersburg), leading development for large-scale harm reduction and hepatitis programmes. Since 2020, Alexei has consulted for UNODC, contributing to innovative approaches to reaching people who use drugs with hepatitis and HIV services, including digital and web-based outreach. From 2022 to 2024, he was an NGO Europe delegate in the NGO Delegation to the Programme Coordinating Board of UNAIDS, bringing forward intersecting issues of hepatitis and HIV in this high-level UN space.

Currently based in Germany, he has been a part-time Executive Director and a consultant of the European Network of People Who Use Drugs (EuroNPUD), advocating for equitable access to hepatitis prevention, treatment, and long-term liver health.

In addition, Alexei has been collaborating with the International Liver Cancer Movement as a patient advocate, strengthening links between hepatitis elimination, early detection of liver cancer, and community-based advocacy.
